Bonifacio Global City

Bonifacio Global City (BGC), often called “Global City” or “The Fort,” is a 240‑hectare master‑planned central business district and township inside Taguig City, Metro Manila. It functions as a self‑contained “city within a city,” mixing high‑rise offices, luxury condos, schools, malls, parks, and embassies in one walkable grid.

Location and history

BGC sits within the former Fort Bonifacio military base, formerly known as Fort McKinley, which served as a U.S. Army camp from 1902. After the base was turned over to the Philippine government and later renamed Fort Bonifacio, the area was redeveloped starting in the mid‑1990s into what is now BGC.

Land use and economy

BGC is a mixed‑use estate with about 240 hectares of office towers, residential skyscrapers, hotels, shopping centers, schools, and green spaces. It hosts the Philippine Stock Exchange and many multinational and local corporations, earning labels such as one of the country’s “financial capitals” and even “Wall Street of Asia.”

Lifestyle and amenities

The district is known for its upscale malls (like Bonifacio High Street, Market! Market!, and more), high‑end restaurants, bars, art installations, and public parks. It offers a dense concentration of lifestyle amenities—cinemas, gyms, spas, international schools, and hospitals—making it attractive to professionals, expats, and new‑middle‑class families.

Layout and transportation

BGC has a grid‑like street layout with wide, tree‑lined avenues and abundant pedestrian crossings, designed to feel more pedestrian‑friendly than much of Metro Manila. It is connected to nearby business districts such as Makati and Ortigas via roads and the BGC–Ortigas Link Bridge, and it has its own internal BGC Bus system and commercial shuttle routes.

Governance and local context

Although BGC is managed by the Bonifacio Land Corporation–Fort Bonifacio Development Corporation consortium, it lies under Taguig City’s jurisdiction and is one of that city’s most prominent landmarks. Because of its economic weight, BGC has helped drive Taguig’s growth in population and business activity over the last two decades.
